Dear Reader,

Welcome to the March edition of The Bounce from nuBound!

This month we start with a report from Ryan Barnett of Blue Competition Cycles, the official bicycle supplier to USA Triathlon and the US Olympic triathlon team. Riding in the early season UCI Tour of the Dominican Republic, Ryan found himself working harder than expected as his team stood at the top of the standings.

We also have two inspirational stories this month: Buster Martin's quest to finish the London Marathon and Michael Scott's helpful recounting of excuses to avoid exercise today. At the end of these two stories, you'll no longer have any excuse.

If you have ideas, thoughts or stories for future issues, please let us know!

Ryan Barnett on a Blue TT Bike
Ryan Barnett is the Marketing Director for Blue Competition Cycles, the official supplier for USA Triathlon. The US Olympic triathlon team will be riding Blue cycles this summer at the Games in Beijing.

In addition to promoting the brand, Ryan also holds the UCI Elite Category 1 racing license. Last month he rode with the CAICO Pro Team in a UCI sanctioned 9-day, 11-stage race around the Caribbean nation of the Dominican Republic.

While an untimely flat on the penultimate stage cost the CAICO Pro Cycling team the yellow jersey by 30 seconds, they still managed to win the overall team competition in the XXIX Vuelta Independencia National (UCI 2.2). Next up for the team is the first race of their US campaign at the Redland's Bicycle Classic in California.

Here is the report Ryan sent on his experience:

Just wanted to send you an email to let you know that I finally used the bottle of nuBound you gave me last year and was very impressed.

I hadn't trained as much as I should have over the winter but none the less went to race the UCI Tour of the Dominican Republic two weeks ago with the CAICO Pro team we sponsor out of Colombia. I started using nuBound two weeks before this stage race and was very impressed. I had planned to ride myself into shape during the race, but was forced into working for our team leader after stage 3 when we took over the lead in the general classification.

We all got the same recovery products post-race from the team in the form of an IV liquid that has Vitamin C, folic acid, and then every other day a B Complex. Some of the guys used Hammer nutrition products and other recovery aids in addition to what the team provided. I used nothing else but nuBound.

On day 6, the team masseuse made a comment to me that my legs had way less lactic acid build up than the other guys on the team. (And trust me they were in better shape than I was at the moment)! He mentioned that my muscles still felt very supple with just a few knots, whereas everyone else had significant lactic acid build up, which was taking longer to work out ...

... I just don't want to tell anyone though! Ha ha! Thanks for the product and I will be reordering!

Not feeling quite as fast as you once did? Are you struggling with no longer setting life time PRs and only working on age group PRs? Not to worry--there's always a new challenge you can find. Buster Martin of London is currently training for the London Marathon with a plan to set a world record. Buster Martin was born in 1907 and is 101 years old. If he completes this race, as he recently did with a half marathon, he will become the oldest person to finish a marathon.

While race times and performances slow down for older athletes, it is still possible to produce amazing performances. A recent article noted, that "the world best marathon time for men 70 or older (2:54:05) was set by a 74-year-old. That is more than four minutes faster than the winning marathon time at the first modern Olympics, the 1896 Games in Athens."
Mike Scott, senior with the University of Wisconsin Warhawks basketball team, provides a handy list of excuses for why you shouldn't work out today.

There are a lot of them, including:
I'm too weak, too slow, too big, I ate too much for breakfast, I got a headache, it's raining, my dog is sick, I cant right now, I'm not inspired, makes me smell bad, I'm allergic to stuff, I'm fat, I'm thin, it's too hot, I'm not right, I've got shin splints, headache, I'm distracted, I exerted myself too much, I'd love to really but I can't...

If you're in Boston at the end of this month, come see us at the Multisport World Conference and Expo on Sunday March 30th at MIT's Zesiger Sports Center. And next month, keep your eyes open for nuBound during the Boston Marathon (Apr 21st) and the Women's Olympic Marathon Trials (Apr 20th @ 8am).

The Trials course will make four loops of a circuit that includes Boylston Street, Commonwealth Avenue, the Mass Avenue Bridge and Memorial Drive (on the Cambridge side of the Charles River). Spectators can easily position themselves to see the pack passing eight times over the course of the race. This multi-loop format provided a great opportunity in the Men's Olympic Trials. The Women's Trials promise similar excitement!

Watch for us at other races and events throughout the year to come. As always, make sure to catch The Bounce from nuBound!

Sincerely,

nuBOUND
